December 10-13, 2009 8th International Workshop on Precipitation in Urban Areas - St. Moritz, Switzerland

Adverse weather severely impacts the life of people in urban areas. Society at large is paying attention to the quality and horizon of weather forecasts, the risks of getting wet or being flooded, to climate change and its broad impacts, as well as flood risk and flood damage, especially in urban areas. Critical questions are raised with respect to the reliability of climate simulations, the propagation of uncertainty, and the range of consequences for daily life. These are challenges for scientists, practitioners and managers alike.

Following the tradition of previous workshops, the main objective of this event is to provide a focussed forum for exchanging ideas and information in order to bridge the gap between scientific achievements and critical issues that need to be addressed in practice. Accordingly, contributions meeting the workshop themes are welcome on both application oriented basic research and operational urban hydrology.

The productive and sustainable use of water resources is vital to the health, safety and economic well being of any society. Water resource infrastructure development during the 20th century was pivotal to the prosperity of our growing nation. The dams, reservoirs, powerhouses, levee and canal systems are sources of reliable green power, flood control, municipal water supply, food production, efficient transportation and public recreation. Along with these benefits and increased economic opportunities, we began gaining a greater understanding and appreciation of the environment, as well as a greater desire to participate in resource use decisions. During the 21st century, the astute and adaptive management of watersheds and facilities will be necessary to sustain and improve these benefits and to meet the changing needs of society and our evolving knowledge of the changing water resource picture.

August 2010

August 23-27, 2010 2010 Watershed Management Conference - Madison, WI

Climate change has the potential to undermine our traditional approaches for managing water resources in developed and developing areas. This demands a partnership between researchers, practitioners, managers, regulators, and the public.

Themed “Innovations in Watershed Management Under Land Use and Climate Change,” this conference will highlight innovative approaches for managing water resources under climate and land use change. Relevant topics include hydrologic measurement and modeling, integrated and/or adaptive water management, aquatic ecosystem restoration, risk-based design, and the use of regional predictions of climate change. We expect to attract a diverse group of researchers, practitioners, managers, and regulators, and will engage them in one or more activities focused on bridging the gap between research and practice.
